Internet Fraud has become the source of great concern for many. With con artists and fraudsters emerging regularly, fraud over the internet has become a menace and has left many in wonder and at loss.
Many fake and untrustworthy websites ask for personal information which is generally taken via email or phone. There are also many fake online auction websites who claim to give away free gits and offer huge lotteries. Similarly certain business sites also tend to offer their customers hefty payments and additional offerings. Insecure servers are also one of the reasons that might lead to fraud.
If you have an online ecommerce business, offer credit/debit card processing over the internet or have an internet merchant account then providing your customers with an online protection will increase their confidence in the online business and your services as such activities are prone to fraud and scam. Online fraud protection tools and software will help you in checking and validating the authenticity of suspicious mail orders and email. Fraud protection will help you lessen the probability of credit card scam and minimize the impact of potential fraud on your business. Here is what you can do:
• Never respond to emails asking for personal information without verification. Banks and other financial institutions normally don’t ask for personal information via email. In case of suspicious email, report immediately
• Do not trust links given in emails. Instead directly type the URL of the bank or company and make sure that you have an authentic URL
• Check your credit card financial records and bills every month so that in case of scam you are able to detect at the right moment. If something seems wrong, contact your credit card company immediately
• Websites that do not begin with “http” are not secure, so make sure that the website you provide personal information to is secure and has http written before its URL
• Make sure that the website is authentic and secure before giving out your personal information
• Proceed with caution when responding to special offers that claim to give away hefty amount of cash
• Tools like email filter, firewall, anti-spy ware/ ad ware and anti-virus software can be used to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic
Although no one can guarantee 100% fraud protection however by taking certain precautionary measures you can save yourself and your business from a big loss.
